Dresden Codex Model

As a papermaker and an amateur Mayanist, I am (not surprisingly) obsessed with the Dresden Codex – the most intact of the ancient Maya bark paper books. I've finally gotten around to making a facsimile of my own. Here's a studio shot right after I finished beating a 12' x 8" continuous piece of bark paper using thai kozo. Pictured left to right are a selection from my bark beater collection: 1) an ancient Mayan beater 2) a foot pumice that I used for my first two years of bark papermaking 3) a volcanic rock beater I picked up in San Pablito, Puebla.
